Street Legal Nitrous: Laws and Regulations by Country
The legality of nitrous oxide systems for street use varies dramatically by country and even by state or province within countries. Understanding the regulations before installation can save significant legal headaches.
United States
Federal law does not prohibit NOS for street use, but many states do. California CARB regulations prohibit systems that modify fuel metering, which includes most wet nitrous kits. Texas, Nevada, and Florida are generally more permissive but require proper bottle mounting and safety equipment.
United Kingdom
In the UK, nitrous oxide for automotive use is legal, but since 2016 possession for recreational inhalation is banned under the Psychoactive Substances Act. This doesn’t affect legitimate automotive applications. DVLA has no specific prohibition on NOS-equipped vehicles for road use.
European Union
EU regulations vary by member state. Germany’s TÜV certification system generally requires documentation for any performance modification. France allows NOS with proper vehicle modification documentation. Most EU states require the modification be declared to insurance.
Australia
Australian Design Rules govern vehicle modifications. Nitrous systems require LVVTA certification in most states. NSW and QLD have specific provisions for engine modifications including NOS, requiring engineering certificates for road registration.
