NOS Safety Guide: Installing Nitrous Systems Correctly

Nitrous oxide is fundamentally safe when properly installed, maintained, and operated within design parameters. Most NOS-related incidents result from improper installation, incorrect jetting, or operating systems on engines not properly prepared for nitrous use.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Verify engine condition — compression test all cylinders
  • Check timing — retard 2 degrees per 50hp shot
  • Inspect spark plugs — use one heat range colder
  • Verify fuel system capacity for target power level
  • Check for vacuum leaks before adding nitrous

Bottle Placement

The N₂O bottle must be mounted at a 15-degree angle with the valve pointing toward the front of the vehicle. This ensures the siphon tube remains submerged in liquid nitrous. Secure the bottle with proper clamps rated for the bottle diameter.

Line Routing

Keep nitrous lines away from heat sources including exhaust components, headers, and catalytic converters. Use braided stainless lines rated for high-pressure NOS service. Avoid sharp bends that could restrict flow.

Activation Safety

  • Never activate below 3,000 RPM
  • Always be at wide-open throttle before activation
  • Use a purge system to evacuate gaseous vapor before runs
  • Install an RPM window switch for automatic cutoff
  • Add a throttle position switch as secondary safety

The golden rule: if in doubt, go with a smaller jet. You can always increase nitrous delivery, but you cannot un-detonate an engine.
